 The Electricity & Cogeneration Regulatory Authority held a workshop on "Reforming Electricity Industry in Saudi Arabia"

The Electricity & Cogeneration Regulatory Authority held a workshop on "Reforming Electricity Industry in Saudi Arabia" to review international experience in electricity industry reforms and the need for de-regulation measures to develop performance efficiency of the electricity industry in the Kingdom, Vice Governor for Regulatory Affairs in the Authority Dr. Abdullah Al-Shehry, stated.

The workshop was attended by more than one hundred officials and professionals from visitors government and private bodies, including members of the Shura Council, Ministry of Water and Electricity, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Economy & Planning, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Ministry of Petroleum & Mineral Resources, Saudi Electricity Company, Saline Water Conversion Corporation and members of major electricity industry stakeholders.

Dr. Al-Shehry added that the workshop reviewed the best practices followed international utilities in restructuring and developing the electricity industry and unbundling of vertically integrated utilities, it was presented by London Economics International from USA, and by CMS Cameron Mckenna from UK. Anther aspect that was addressed was the potential gains of the electricity industry reforms (or de-regulations) and their possible impacts on customers and prospective investors, presented by Dr. Brian Wharmby, President Wharmby Investment Co, former Technical Director of the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (OFGEM), U.K.
